| Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure Requirements
Chapter 383a provides several mechanisms and effective dates for candidates to qualify
for Connecticut licensure as a marriage and family therapist. These are outlined below:
LICENSURE BY EXAMINATION
A candidate may be licensed by examination provided he/she has:
- completed a graduate degree program specializing in Marital and Family Therapy, as
defined by regulation, from a regionally accredited college or university:
- completed at least twelve (12) months of supervised practicum or internship within a
period not to exceed eighteen (18) consecutive months, with an emphasis in marital and
family therapy, and supervised by either the program granting the degree or by an
accredited post-graduate clinical training program which is approved by the commission on
Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education, and recognized by the U.S.
Department of Education, in which the student received a minimum of five hundred (500)
direct clinical hours that included one hundred (100) hours of clinical supervision:
- subsequent to award of the master's or doctoral degree, or subsequent to the
post-graduate clinical training program, completed a minimum of twelve (12) months of
relevant post-graduate experience, which included at least 1000 hours of direct client
contact offering marital and family therapy, and one hundred hours of supervised
casework provided by a licensed marital and family therapist (please note that for a
post-graduate experience that commences on or after January 1, 1996,
the applicant shall not have directly compensated
the supervisor for such supervision);
- successfully completed the examination prescribed by the Department of Public Health.
LICENSURE WITHOUT EXAMINATION BASED ON OUT-OF-STATE
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
A candidate may be certified by this route provided he/she:
- meets the education, training work experience, and supervision requirement specified
above;
- is currently practicing practitioner licensed or certified in another state as a
Marriage and Family Therapist;
- is in good professional standing in the state of licensure or certification; and
- was licensed or certified on the basis of standards commensurate with Connecticut's
current licensure standards;
- has submitted a qualifying application and fee of $250.00 to the Department of Public
Health;
- verification of passing score on the Examination in Marital and family Therapy of the
Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (contact Professional
Examination Service, 475 Riverside Drive, NY 10115 in order to have your score report
officially transmitted to this agency).
LICENSURE APPLICATION PROCEDURES
All applicant materials for Marital and Family Licensure should be forwarded to:
Department of Public Health and Family Therapist Licensure, 150 Washington Street,
Hartford, CT 06106.
All Applicants must submit the following:
- Fully-completed application form, including passport-type photograph and authorization
accompanied by non-refundable application processing fee of $250, submitted by certified
check or money order, payable to: "Treasurer, State of Connecticut:"
- Official transcripts of all college study, forwarded DIRECTLY to this office from the
institution at which the studies were undertaken. If the program of studies is not AAMFT
approved or was not approved at the time of graduation, arrange to have a catalog
description of the program and courses sent with the transcript. Applicants who have
attended more than one post-secondary institution must request that an official transcript
be forwarded directly to this office by each institution at which studies were
undertaken;
- verification of any licenses/certificates held in other states.
Additionally, applicants must submit documents to verify specific credentials on which
the application is based, as follows:
Applicants for licensure by examination, based on education and training in Marital
and family Therapy:
- verification of twelve (12) months of supervised practicum or internship submitted
directly to this office by those completing the verification.
- Verification of (12) months of post-graduate work experience, submitted directly to this
office by the individuals(s) completing verification(s).
Applicants for licensure without examination, based on licensure/certification in
another state:
- Verification of (12) months of supervised practicum or internship submitted directly to
this office by the individual(s) completing verification(s):
- Verification of (12) months of post-graduate work experience, submitted directly to this
office by the individual(s) completing verification(s):
- Verification of out-of-state licensure/certification directly from each state of
licensure/certification;
- Verification of passing score on the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy of the
Association of marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (contact Professional
Examination Service, 475 Riverside Drive New York, NY 10115 in order to have your score
report officially transmitted to this agency).
