We had high hopes that this time,
moose would be sighted
on our drives and hikes around Moosehead Lake....and our
hopes and dreams were fulfilled! On the May 18th journey,
we saw FIVE moose....first, a darling, awkward young teenage
moose who came out of the woods and walked/ran up the road
in front of us for half a mile. His wobbly gait was adorable
and we felt sure he was new to his legs and still getting himself
oriented on them.
I was driving and trying to
photograph, so those photos didn't
come out, but after our beautiful hike, we saw this flirtatious
mother moose, who gained more and more trust until she was
8 feet away from me! |
|
But first, she was well camouflaged
when we drove past, and I just made out a shape that didn't match the
willows to our left. I stopped the car and we watched as she peered at
us through the perfect cover. |
|
|
Then she
went back to eating her lush wet grasses, as the willows were not
blooming yet. |
|
|
From time to time, we all heard a
thrumping in the water...half wail/half croak....we couldn't make out
whether it was a huge frog gallumphing or something bigger. Mrs. Moose
couldn't tell what it was either.... |

|
|
|
As time passed, she began to trust
that we were friendly, as she became used to the click of my
camera....she started moving towards us so quickly that I lost focus.... |
|
|
YIPES!!, I thought, she's going to ram
the car, as she came out of the swamp and within a dozen feet of the
car.... |
|
|
But she had other ideas...she wanted
to go find some dessert across the street....so she walked slowly
by...keeping a wary eye on me... |
|
|
And then stopped in the middle of the
road to flirt and show off her fine figure! |
|
|
Then off she went into the woods....a
magical interlude in our gorgeous adventure. |
